A Black Woman's Journey

My Dearest Sister,

You have held everyone. Here, you are held.

Free Your Mind is an unhurried return to yourself — for the woman who has spent her life being the strong one.

Begin the journey

If you are reading this

The world calls you the strong one.

The dependable one. The woman who figures it out, holds it together, and carries what others cannot set down. You have built a life that looks like everything you were told to want — and much of it, you earned with your own two hands.

And still, in the quiet hours, there is a tiredness that achievement never quite reaches. A longing to be cared for the way you so faithfully care for everyone else.

You are not broken, Sister. You are depleted. And depletion is not a flaw of character — it is the cost of carrying too much, for too long, alone.

Free Your Mind is where you are finally allowed to set it down.

You Are Not Alone

And it is not only you, Sister.

If this weariness feels familiar, know that you are not imagining it — and you are far from the only one carrying it.

These are not signs of weakness. They are the sound of women carrying too much, for too long, with too few hands to help.

Why Rest Has Not Been Enough

We have been sold rest in a thousand forms.

$9.4 Billion

is what our community invested in beauty and self-care in a single year — and still, the weariness remains.

NielsenIQ, 2023

The spa day. The scented candle. The weekend away. There is nothing wrong with any of it — you deserve beautiful things, and rest is holy. But rest that ends on Monday morning was never going to reach a weariness that lives this deep.

You cannot bubble-bath your way out of carrying the world. What the soul is asking for is not another product, and not another escape. It is to be witnessed. To lay the weight down in good company. To come home to yourself — and return changed.

That is what Free Your Mind was built to do.

Who Holds This Space

Cyd McDaniel-McGee

LCSW · Founder of Essential Journey

My Dearest Sister, before you decide anything, I want you to know the woman who will be holding the space.

I am Cyd — a wife, a mother, and a daughter of a long line of women who carried far more than anyone ever saw. For more than twenty years, as a licensed clinical therapist in North Carolina and South Carolina, I have sat with over three thousand women and families through grief, transition, and the quiet exhaustion that achievement never seems to reach.

I founded Essential Journey to do this work with depth and dignity. I am trained in trauma care and EMDR, a proud graduate of Howard University, and a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. My life's work has been the healing of Black women.

But I did not build Free Your Mind from a textbook. I built it because I know, personally, what it is to be the strong one — to be admired, relied upon, and still somehow unseen.

I have done my own work, too. I have learned to honor the experiences that shaped me — every season, even the hardest — and to see how they made me the woman I am, and the woman I am still becoming. I will never ask you to walk anywhere I have not been willing to walk myself.

This is my mission: to invite women like you into a community of sisters who are laying the weight down — done performing strength in private, and ready, at last, to be seen, held, and restored. Not alone. Together.

This retreat is the room I once needed. Now I hold it open for you.

The Framework

Five movements home

Free Your Mind unfolds the way a true journey does — not all at once, but in its own time. Each movement makes room for the next.

01

Removal

Setting it down.

You arrive carrying what you always carry — the roles, the expectations, the weight of being the one who holds it all together. The first movement is permission to set it down. Not forever. Just here. Just for now.

02

Witness

Being seen.

There is a particular loneliness in being admired but rarely known. To be witnessed is to be received exactly as you are — with nothing to manage and no one to reassure. Here, you are seen, and you let yourself be.

03

Embodiment

Coming home to your body.

Years of holding it together live in the body long after the mind has moved on. Embodiment is the slow, tender return to yourself — to breath, to stillness, to the quiet intelligence you stopped pausing to hear.

04

Voice

Reclaiming your own.

Somewhere along the way you learned to swallow the truth to keep the peace. The fourth movement is the return of your voice — your yes, your no, your needs, spoken plainly and without apology.

05

Return

Going home whole.

You will go back to your life, your work, and the people who depend on you. But you will not return as the woman who arrived. You carry the stillness with you now. The same world meets a different woman.

The Gathering

The Free Your Mind Retreat

October 15–18, 2026  ·  Peace on the Pond  ·  Douglasville, Georgia

Four unhurried days. Ten women. One sanctuary by the water.

This is not a conference. There is no stage, no schedule that owns you, no performance required of you. It is a small and deliberate gathering — kept intentionally intimate, so that every woman is known by name and held with care.

Before You Decide

Where are you on the journey?

A quiet reflection — five questions, no right answers — to help you hear where you truly are.

My Dearest Sister,

The Free Your Mind Reflection

Take a breath, and let yourself tell the truth about where you are. It will take only a few minutes.

One last thing

Where shall we send your reflection?

With love,
Cyd

In Their Own Words

What it means to be seen

Thank you for seeing me. It allowed me to see how all the pieces — the negative and the positive — created a quilt-like tapestry which is my life. I can proudly wrap myself in it. It brings healing tears to my eyes.

Before You Ask

Honest questions, honest answers

Therapy tends the wound; this deeper work begins where the bleeding has stopped. Free Your Mind is a transformational and restorative experience, not clinical treatment. If you are in acute distress or seeking therapy, I will help you find the right care. But if you are stable, accomplished, and simply tired of carrying it all — reaching for something more — this is for you.
I know. The very fact that four days feels impossible is often the clearest sign of how long you have gone without rest. You give everyone else your time without question. This is four days returned to you — not stolen from anyone, but finally spent on the one person you have left for last.
Ten women, no more — most of them accomplished, high-achieving, and quietly depleted, just as you may be. The circle is kept small and confidential on purpose, so that every woman is known by name and no one has to perform. What is said at the water stays at the water.
There is no stage and no schedule that owns you. We move gently through the five movements — Removal, Witness, Embodiment, Voice, and Return — woven together with real rest, nourishing food, stillness by the water, and the company of women who understand. You will not be asked to perform. You will be asked, perhaps for the first time in a long while, to simply be.
The retreat is a $5,597 investment that includes your stay, your meals, and every part of the experience by the water. Only you can weigh what it is worth to come home to yourself — but I have never met a woman who regretted finally choosing herself. When you send your application, we can speak about the details together, gently and without pressure.

The Free Your Mind Retreat welcomes only ten women, and I receive each of them personally. This is not a payment — it is simply how we begin. Share a little of your heart below, and I will read it myself and reach out to you.

My Dearest Sister,

You have spent so long being the answer for everyone else. Let this be the season you become your own.
